Description

These include The American Civil War (1961), The Island Race (1964) , Heroes of History (1968), and Joan of Arc (1969). And while I know where England is, of course, Wales, and Scotland and Ireland, I had no idea where Dobnni, Catuvellauni or the town of Durobrivae was/is located during the time that Rome inhabited Great Britain.

So I stopped and printed out maps of Britain when it was under the control of the Roman Empire (which owned much of the known world at the time) and, of course, looked on the maps to see where the events were taking place. However, it feels as if the editor didn't want to include them at all (does Churchill's version of the tale so clash with American established version?Handsomely bound in red half oasis morocco, with raised bands, gilt titles and further gilt 'lion rampant' decoration to the spines, and matching cloth over boards. Churchill's four volume epic, A History of the English-Speaking Peoples, was published between 1956 and 1958. May-London, head and foot of spines fine, inner and outer hinges fine, internally clean and bright, no previous ownership markings, gift inscription, or bookplate, overall A FINE SET. Includes a page from the January 30th, 1965 editoin of the Financial Times with an article by Alan Hodge entitledThe Churchill Family and the State.

It was started in 1937 and finally published 1956–1958, delayed several times by war and his work on other texts. The BBC produced a series of twenty-six fifty-minute plays loosely based around Churchill's work and entitled Churchill's People which were broadcast in 1974 and 1975. He notices that the rock formations of where gold is mined and discovered is similar to the formations in Australia. His cabinet positions included First Lord of the Admiralty at the outbreak of the First World War and later Chancellor of the Exchequer. Clement Atlee - who replaced Churchill as premier in 1945 and who Churchill would in turn defeat in 1951 - concisely jabbed with the comment that the work might have been titled "Things in History Which Interested Me.The dust jackets are especially striking, uniform in style, but each featuring different background color and illustrations on the lower half of the faces and spines.

Minor issues present such as mild cracking, inscriptions, inserts, moderate foxing, tanning and thumb marking. The endpapers are marbled and elaborately gilt tooled, all edges are gilded, the spines are gilt-lettered in six compartments with raised bands. The work met with acclaim and proved an international best-seller, further vindicating Churchill's receipt of the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1953.

A just about Fine set with a knock to the lower corner of volume three and the odd spot of foxing throughout.

My average read is one to two days, three max but there are a few reasons for taking so long on this great book.
