About this deal

Cragganmore distillery is located in Ballindalloch, Speyside. It sits by the River Spey and it’s also near to the Strathspey railway line, both important factors when the distillery location was decided. The distillery takes its name from the mountain in whose shadow it sits. Cragganmore range includes this 12 year old single malt and Distillers Edition. They’ve had special bottlings, such as the 14 year old for Friends of the Classic Malts. Cragganmore 12YO has been matured in second fill bourbon barrels and like mentioned, the whisky is slightly smoky. This malt is also a component for Johnnie Walker, Old Parr and White Horse blended whiskies. By The River (Spey) I ended up polishing off the small bottle after a bit, walking the root-bound shore and watching the nearly full moon along the St Croix. The Craggenmore 12 is as every bit as good as any 12 scotch 2 or 3 times it’s price, or for that matter any price. seriously this whole business of marketing scotch, wine, etc, has been elevated to absurdity, and I think the real mission of reviewers such as yourself should be exposing it to the public for what it is not perpetuating it. If any provision of these Terms is held invalid, the remainder of the Terms shall continue in full force and effect. Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 20th Anniversary Edition Spirit of Speyside Whisky Festival 2019 In my mind, Cragganmore 12 Year Old is one of those single malts that a Scotch novice should move onto after becoming acquainted with the Big Pair of single malt Scotch, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet. The distillery’s owner, Diageo, recognizes this too, having made the expression the Speyside whisky in its Classic Malts range. With its natural tastes emerging through a nice smooth burn, it seemed just the right Scotch for being outdoors for days on a wilderness adventure. In the glass, Cragganmore has the color of white wine with the kind of rich substance that leans out of paleness and into gold. The nose is fragrant with spring meadow scents, heather, hay and wildflowers, mingled with a tinge of smoke, as if a fire were downwind. Balance: Cragganmore 12 is a malt which divides people. Those who like the basic, and I mean BASIC, flavours of barley-malt, often like this just fine. I have always found Cragganmore 12 to be quite pleasant and enjoyable. There is really no "WOW" factor present, though, for those who seek one out The first time I heard the term used in a wine store, the salesman was using it on a customer, I almost busted out laughing right in front of them. The customer must have felt like a jerk, afterall his mere pallet only qualified for the ‘entry level’ wine, he probably walked away thinking that his holiday dinner at home which he was buying the wine for was – well just an entry level dinner too, poor guy.

I enjoyed the Cragganmore 12 yo without water, but could not finish it the moment I added the water. It was as if the water changed the sweetness into orange peel notes. How strange. I enjoyed the balance between the sweetness and the smoke, but this changed the moment you add some water. This would be fantastic at a higher abv, but that can be experienced in the several special editions or independent bottlings available for those willing to do some sleuthing. Altogether it’s a solid bottle to start off a beginner’s journey into single malts. PALATE: Honey and fruit sweetness with hints of smoked nuts and malt. The Cragganmore 12 yo has a medium body and a creamy mouthfeel. Adding water softens the sweetness and brings more spices to the front. Suddenly there are notes of spicy oak and dry orange peel with cloves and pepper.I was gifted a 20cl bottle of Cragganmore 12 by my brother. He doesn't share my enthusiasm for whisky so I was surprised he went for a 12yo scotch that isn't a household name around here. Cragganmore is part of the Diegeo portfolio, and is an entry level Speyside whisky bottled at 40%. My expectations are not too high but this is new for me so I'm excited to try it. Finish: Short to medium in length and with a very pleasant gentle progressive fade. A touch of cask spicing and barley malts. I kept nipping at it now and then when walking by the table and loved the almondy, honey smoothness of it that crept through the smooth burn while I kept it in my mouth before letting it slide down.
